Antique Whitework Embroidered Handkerchief

This is a very heavily embroidered whitework handkerchief with unusual linear design. Due to the design I think it is possible that this may be a chalice cover intended for ecclesiastical use rather than a handkerchief but I can't be certain. 

It measures 37 cms square.

Wonderful fine embroidery with needlelace fillings. Clean, very pale ivory colour. Embroidery is in good condition but there are several small pinholes and 2 tiny tears to the cotton lawn (see last 2 photos).
