This is a tiny miniature gentleman's shirt dating from the mid 19th century. Beautifully detailed, it has a pleated front with 5 Dorset buttons and 'Jane Edmunds age 17' embroidered in red.

Top of collar to hem measures 21cms, cuff to cuff laid flat measures 35cms. Made from slightly different weights of ivory white cotton.

This is very similar to a sample piece in 'The National Society's Instructions on Needlework and Knitting' published in 1838. This was a system of teaching sewing skills to girls, enabling them to earn a living.

Very decorative, would look good in box frame.
