Handkerchief with hand embroidered illustration of the Panthéon, Paris, dated Juillet 1867 in one corner.
These finely embroidered handkerchiefs, sometimes called grand tour handkerchiefs, were produced in Appenzell, Switzerland. The ones I've come across were closely copied from contemporary engravings, this one included - see illustration. The Panthéon, a Parisian monument in the Latin Quarter, was built in the 18th Century and is where great figures from French history have been buried since the Revolution.
The Panthéon is framed by foliage with hydrangeas, tulips and wheatears. There are Alencon style needle lace fillings to windows. AL, 2 Julliet 1867 embroidered underneath.
Some slight pulling to the linen, apart from this excellent condition.
